Sign Board Sizes: A Guide to Standard UK Sign Sizes

Updated ·4 min read

Standard sign sizes follow the ISO A series: A4 is 210 × 297mm, A3 is 297 × 420mm, A2 is 420 × 594mm, A1 is 594 × 841mm and A0 is 841 × 1189mm. The largest board is the full sheet at 1220 × 2440mm (8 × 4ft). Our flat signs also come in custom sizes from 50 to 1500mm by 50 to 3050mm, so a fascia, a site board or a door sign can be made to fit.

A flat Foamex sign starts from £10.50 and a flat aluminium sign from £16.00, including VAT, at the smallest size.

A-Series Sign Sizes in mm

Millimetres are the standard unit for signs, so every size is given in mm, width first and then height.

  • A4: 210 × 297mm, from £11.50 in Foamex
  • A3: 297 × 420mm, from £15.50 in Foamex
  • A2: 420 × 594mm, from £24.00 in Foamex
  • A1: 594 × 841mm, from £38.50 in Foamex
  • A0: 841 × 1189mm, from £67.00 in Foamex

Each size is half the one above it, and A0 has an area of 1 square metre. Aluminium costs more, and the calculator on each product page shows both prices side by side. See the pages for A1 and A0 in aluminium, or A1 and A0 in Foamex. If you also print posters, our poster sizes guide covers the A series in more detail.

The Full 8 × 4ft Sheet

The biggest standard board is the full sheet, 1220 × 2440mm (8 × 4ft). It is the largest single panel we offer as a preset, and it suits large site boards and big fascia panels. Anything over 1.5m on a side is too big for our standard courier, so it goes by large-item delivery, which we price after you order, or you can collect it free from our workshop in Trafford Park, Manchester.

Some signs come in fixed sizes of their own:

Choosing a Size by Viewing Distance

The further away people are when they first see your sign, the bigger the lettering needs to be, and the fewer words it should carry. A door sign read from arm's length can be small. A fascia read from across the street needs large letters and a short name.

Work backwards from where people will stand. Decide the main message, make that as large as the space allows and keep supporting text short. Seeing your sign on a proof before it is made helps you judge this, and your proof always shows the size we will make.

Measure Before You Choose

Whatever size you pick, measure the space first. Measure the width and height in millimetres at more than one point, and use the smallest figures. Our guide to measuring for a shop sign shows how, and our sign sizes chart lets you compare the sizes against everyday objects. If you are unsure, send your measurements and photos on the quote page and we will help.

Common Questions

What is the standard size for a shop sign?

There is no single standard, because every fascia is different. Many shop fascia panels are long and narrow, such as 1500 × 500mm. Measure your space and enter the size on the product page.

What size is A1 in mm?

A1 is 594 × 841mm. A2 is 420 × 594mm and A0 is 841 × 1189mm. Each A size is half the one above it.

How big is an 8 × 4ft sign board?

A full 8 × 4ft sheet is 1220 × 2440mm. We offer it as a preset size on both flat aluminium and flat Foamex signs.

Can I order a custom size?

Yes. Flat Foamex and aluminium signs can be made from 50 to 1500mm by 50 to 3050mm. Enter your width and height in millimetres and the price updates straight away.

Do larger signs cost more?

Yes, because they use more material and print. The price per square metre falls as the sign gets bigger, so one large panel usually costs less than several small ones covering the same area. See our shop sign cost guide.
