Indoor vs Outdoor Signs: Which Materials to Choose

Updated ·3 min read

For a sign that will live outdoors for years, choose aluminium composite (ACM): it is rigid, light and weather resistant, and it is what our flat aluminium signs and signtrays are made from. Foamex suits indoor signs and short-term outdoor use, clear acrylic is made for interiors, and PVC banners, correx and pavement A-boards cover temporary and portable outdoor jobs.

Finishes that help a sign last

On our flat signs you can add a laminate over the print:

  • Matt laminate: non-reflective protection that reduces glare.
  • Gloss laminate: protection that makes colours look richer.
  • Anti-graffiti laminate: wipe-clean protection against graffiti and marker, worth adding in exposed spots.
  • Dry-wipe laminate (Foamex): a writable finish for indoor boards you want to write on with dry-wipe markers.

You can also choose premium printed vinyl, a professional-grade vinyl with excellent durability, in place of standard print.

Four questions to decide

  1. How long does it need to last? For years outdoors, choose aluminium composite. For a season, an event or a promotion, Foamex, correx or a PVC banner will do the job for less.
  2. How exposed is the spot? A sign within reach on a busy street benefits from aluminium composite and an anti-graffiti laminate.
  3. Does it need to move? A-boards, roller banners and banners go out and come back in. Fixed signs go on a wall, a fascia or posts.
  4. Does it need to be seen after dark? If so, compare illuminated and non-illuminated signs.

Common questions

What is the best material for an outdoor sign?

Of the materials we sell online, aluminium composite is the best choice for a long-term outdoor sign. It is rigid, light and weather resistant, and an anti-graffiti laminate adds extra protection in exposed spots.

Can Foamex signs go outside?

Yes, for shorter-term outdoor use such as events and temporary signs. For a sign that needs to last outdoors, choose our flat aluminium sign instead.

Can acrylic signs be used outside?

Our clear acrylic stand-off panels are designed for interiors. For an entrance sign outdoors, the brushed aluminium stand-off panel gives a similar raised look and is suitable indoors or outdoors.

Are PVC banners suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. Our PVC banners are weather resistant for indoor or outdoor use. For windy or exposed sites such as scaffolding, ask us about mesh banners on our quote page.
